New Stencils

I designed some new 12" x 24" stencils for StencilGirl a few months ago and today they are now available. I love working with these larger stencils. They work so well with painting on large pieces of fabric. The following samples are painted on cotton duck fabric and can be used for any number of sewing projects.

When I paint on fabric that will be sewn into a pillow cover, tote bag, or whatever, I like to use textile paints as they have a softer hand when dry and that makes for an ideal sewing experience.

The following table runner was hemmed before I painted and then I used artist acrylic paints and finished off with a coat of water-based varnish to make a surface that is easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth if needed.

Pillow covers are always a fun and quick project and I share a tutorial on how to make one with a zipper closure. Click here for the Pillow Cover Tutorial.

You will find all these new stencils and all the ones I have designed in the past on the StencilGirl web site. Click here.

I Just Had To

I always seem to have visions of making myself some "art-to-wear" clothing. I have fabric on hand to do this, and it's been there for some time....but I never seem to get around to doing it.

About a year or two ago I purchased three books by Natalie Chanin on how to create garments like they do at Alabama Chanin. I just love the Alabama Chanin look and if you Google or Pinterest search the name, you will see that many other sewers do too.

I even took an online class with Natalie and at the time just sort of touched the surface with making a garment. I didn't really dive into one as I am doing now.

So about a week or two ago, I decided to JUST DO IT! I just had to get started on creating a garment with these techniques even though I really did not need a new project to work on.  I found two shades of purple cotton jersey fabric in my stash but there was not really enough yardage of the medium purple shade for a garment for myself. So I decided to make a garment that would fit my granddaughter, Rylee...and she loves purple anyway. I also thought that a child-sized garment would be a good beginner project so I could become comfortable with the techniques.

I created my own stencil and cut it with my Silhouette Cameo. I stenciled the design onto the medium purple with a light purple textile paint. I used a foam roller to apply the paint. The Alabama Chanin technique says to cut your fabric pieces first and then stencil the design, but I stenciled the design onto the yardage before cutting. Cotton jersey likes to curl at the edges and I thought all those cut and curling edges would be a big headache.

I cut all my fabric pieces (five pieces in each color) and then layered the dark purple as the bottom layer.

Here is the pattern I used. I am making the shirt that is shown on the packet cover in lime green with the heart on the chest. I won't be putting a heart on this shirt though.

I am almost done with the embroidery on four of the pieces. I have saved the largest of the pattern pieces for last. So far I have only cut (reverse applique) the top layer on one of the pieces. I love how it looks with the three shades of purple.

I chose a turquoise blue embroidery floss to do the backstitching. I contemplated using orange, but decided to go with the blue as Rylee likes blue and purple a lot.

The project uses a lot of embroidery floss. So far I think I've gone through about five skeins of floss. I will need to remember that when I do an adult-sized garment that I will need to buy a lot of floss.

Rylee has become a little fashion diva lately and knows exactly what she likes to wear and what she doesn't like to wear. I don't know if she will like this garment in the end, but I'm okay with that. I am doing it more for the experience and enjoyment and if she does decide she wants to wear it, well, that would be icing on the cake.

And speaking of my little fashion diva, here she is about a week ago when she came over. She is at a stage where she won't smile when I pull the camera out. Here she is coloring with grandma's makers. Why is it that grandma's markers are more fun than her Crayola washable markers?

StencilClub Stencils

Last summer I was thrilled to have the opportunity to design stencils for StencilGirl's StencilClub. So when StencilGirl asked me again if I would like to design for the club, I said YES!

I am the designer for this month's StencilClub. The three stencils are basically round or circular in shape and I've called the collection Round About.

If you click the image above, it will take you to the StencilClub web page where you can learn all about StencilClub, in case you have any questions about how it works.

Below is a video clip I made to introduce these stencils.

If you watch the StencilGirl Talk blog this month, you will see how other artists have used these stencils in their art.

I hope these three stencil designs intrigue you.

My New Favorite Thing

I have found a new toy and I am in love with it. It is Jacquard Color Magnet.

This product is used with fabric dyeing and has been available for some time now but for some reason I just hadn't been inclined to try it. Well better late than never and now that I have I am totally hooked. The first jar I bought was gone in no time.

For my Color Magnet trials I used both Thermofax screens and stencils. The first piece of fabric was my first trial and I mixed my dye slightly too dark, but I still love the result. It is much easier to see the results of this one in person.

What I don't love about this product is -- it is slightly too runny. I wish it was just a bit thicker right out of the jar. Also, there is only one size available. Yes, I want to buy a gallon, please!

Have you tried Color Magnet?

Blog Hop With Craft Attitude

I'm excited to be participating in this blog hop with StencilGirl and Craft Attitude.  I'm always willing to try out a new product and this was a fun opportunity. If you are not familiar with Craft Attitude, the product I played with is a printable craft film that comes packaged in 8.5" x 11" size, with 8 sheets per package. It works in your inkjet printer and can be used on so many craft surfaces.

About 10 or so years ago, I purchased a recipe box. It really wasn't a design that I loved, but I couldn't find anything I liked better at the time. I've lived with these chickens, as cute as they are, for all these years. For a few years now I've thought about redoing the box but just never got around to it. This was my chance. Finally!

The first thing I did with the box was empty it out and then sand all of the outer sides. There was a film of some sort that took a little effort to get off. Then I applied a couple layers of gesso.  In the photos that follow you can see my progression of adding color and design. I used acrylic paints.

First layers of paint--pink, orange, light green.

A little black was added

Some white was added

Yummy rich red!

Stencil design added in yellow.
Stencil: Spider Flower 6"

Stencil design added with teal paint.
Stencil: Inky Circles 6"

Stencil design added with purple paint.
Stencil: Square Dancing 6"

Stencil design added with lime green paint
Stencil: Curvy Stems 9x12"

I am going to add some text to the box and wanted to make sure it would show off and not get lost with all the colors in the background, so I added a section of white where the text will go.

I printed out my text on plain paper.

I positioned the paper on the box to audition the size. Looks good!

I went back to the printer and reversed my text and printed it on a piece of Craft Attitude film. Following the package directions, I allowed the printer ink to dry completely and then cut out my shape. I applied glue stick to the area of the box where the film would go and then applied the film. I burnished it well and then allowed it to dry. For the final step I applied some coats of sealer.

I totally love how my recipe box turned out!

I also wanted to try the Craft Attitude film on a fabric project. I found an image on my computer to use. It was a face I had painted and then scanned into the computer. I wanted to make a market tote and I usually use cotton duck fabric for that tote. Because cotton duck is a more textured fabric than just white quilting cotton, I decided to apply my design to a piece of white quilting cotton first and then applique that to the cotton duck.

I stenciled two pieces of fabric with the same designs. One was the cotton duck and one was the white quilting cotton. I used a piece of white quilting cotton that was large enough so that I could apply my design to one part and then have enough left over to use for the bag's lining. I used Tumble Dyes to apply the stencil designs. It is a fabric paint that you spray on and it leaves a nice soft hand to the fabric.

To apply the Craft Attitude film to the piece of stenciled fabric, I used my favorite fusible web, Mistyfuse. I cut the Mistyfuse about 1/4" smaller than the craft film and then layered the fusible and craft film on the fabric. I covered the layers with a protective ironing sheet and pressed according to the craft film directions. I then appliqued this piece onto the tote bag fabric before it was constructed. Then I finished the tote bag construction.

The stencils used on the tote bag project are:

I had so much fun using the Craft Attitude and I know that I will be thinking of many more projects in which to use it.

And now for the extra fun part. You can have a chance to try out Craft Attitude and get yourself some StencilGirl stencils:
