I was doing some online ruler browsing recently. I've often wondered if a larger ruler would be a good addition to my toolbox. As you can see in the photo below, the largest rulers I own are a 12.5" square ruler and a 6" x 24" ruler. One of the largest square rulers I saw online was somewhere around 20" square. Wow! That's big. I have to wonder if that size is a little awkward. But I would also wonder if it isn't a great ruler for squaring up quilts.
So I'm curious as to what your largest ruler size is. Do you have a mega-large rule in your toolbox? If so, do you use it a lot or a little? What size is your largest ruler?
I got a new sketchbook today. I ordered it online as I had never seen one like this in my local store.
And here is why this sketchbook is so great! It's 12" x 12"!
This is the perfect size sketchbook to draw my quilt designs for the Twelve by Twelve group or when I make this size of quilt for other things....like the SAQA One Foot Square auction. And do you know what's even better than having a sketchbook like this?
Having two!

I have a 20.5" square ruler and I LOVE it and use it a lot!
ReplyDeleteI have an entire drawer of a big armoire full of different types of rulers. But of all those, I still think the biggest one(s) I have are a 24" T-square, and a 6" by 24" ruler. It does sound like a big square ruler would be a great addition for squaring up!
ReplyDeleteGreat topic. I'll be interested in the results of the feedback.
ReplyDeleteI do have a T-24", but that is from back in the days before quilt rulers...and I keep forgetting that it really is a beneficial tool. I need to check all my rulers to provide accurate info, but I think I have an 18"x18" as my max size, and a long 24"x6".
Are you familiar with Rid-Out Plastics? They will also cut plastic in any template size for great price, if you need a special size cut vs ruler.

I borrow my husband's T-square or level if I need it for larger projects...otherwise I just have a couple small (6"x6" and 6" straight rule), which is all I need for the bulk of my work at the moment. But I should think that those who have one probably love it!
ReplyDeleteBTW, the sketch book(s!)-- quite perfect, and I really like the work in Twelve by Twelve -- I learn a lot and it's most inspiring!
I have a 6 1/2 x 24 inch ruler, first I bought. Then I have a 15 inch square. I hate to count how many inbetween. 4" x 14" is my most useful. I would probably get the bigger one if I saw it.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest are two 6.5' x 24" and 12.5x12.5". I love them both. I tend to use them in concert!
ReplyDeleteLove the sketch books - brilliant size!

I have a 20.5 inch ruler too, from Creative Grids. I don't use it a lot, but when I do need it, it's invaluable.
ReplyDeleteI've got an old 15" square and a
ReplyDelete6" X 24". The square does come in handy for applique blocks. My friend's husband took an old chalkboard and cut her various sizes of squares for her quilting.
Rulers....hmm I have a 6x14, a 12.5x12.5, a 6x24. Over the years I have needed a bunch of sizes to square off with and I have gotten them from my plastics place. I have a whole set of acrylic squares that range from 2-1/2" to 24-1/2"...and the cost from the plastics place has been minimal compared to the rulers bought from commercial quilting companies.
ReplyDeleteIn the last few months I purchased that 20 inch or so ruler (JoAnns ETC super store), it is large but so much easier for 15.5 blocks that to not have it.
ReplyDeleteI also have a 4x36 inch ruler (and large 24x36 mat)that I use quite a bit... it is nice for trimming things after quilting to have a longer edge and I use it if I make drapes or something out of 58/60 fabric to cut WOF folded in half.
I like the canson sketch pads, I buy those all the time but I've never seen the 12" square size. My biggest ruler is the 6X24. I also have a 3"x18" ruler that I use a lot too. , I'm not sure where I'd store a 20" ruler!
ReplyDeleteI use my 20.5" square ruler frequently and often in conjunction with my 6" x 24" ruler or 12" ruler. It was expensive but I am glad that I made the investment. I am not big on tons of tools but I do recommend this.
ReplyDeleteI think I would have trouble using a big ruler-just in moving it around. Mine are like yours.
ReplyDeleteMy largest ruler is 36" long by 2" wide. I saw some at the quilt show in Houston last year that made my mouth water, great huge ones that folded for storage. And they had them on giant lazy susans, which I thought was such a good idea, too.
ReplyDeletei also own the big creative grids 20.5" ruler. i love it...
ReplyDeletei use to use the 6.5x24" ruler, but i have 'big' hands and the tip of my thumb was constantly being 'nicked' by the rotary cutter *ouch*, so i bought myself the 24"l x 8.5" wide ruler...i love it...i can cut just about anything for a quilt with it and not have to get another ruler out....
you can never have too many rulers!

I love rulers but so often don't have the one I need nearby. The clay studio usually hogs my sewing T-ruler that is 24" long. The two I use most often in the sewing room: 18x6 and 24x5 with a little 6" by the machine.
ReplyDeleteI have a LOT of rulers, including the 20.5" square one. I use it often enough to be glad to have it. It's very handy.
ReplyDeleteI own almost every Omnigrid ruler there is, from the 2" square to the 20.5" and 8.5" x 24". I'd be lost without them.
ReplyDeleteThe big square is great for squaring up large blocks (Magic Tiles, Convergence quilts) and perfect for squaring up the corners of finished quilts. I use it so often I made my hubby buy me a new one when he broke it!
How great to have a 12x12 sketch book! How many times have I taped pieces of paper together to plan my pieces? Too many. I should order some too. I've never seen them in a store.
ReplyDeleteI have lots of sizes of the omni rulers and I think the 20.5" one gets used the most. I love it for squaring up blocks and corners of quilts.

I don't use rulers at all. If I need a straight line, I tear the cloth. That's the kick about it.
ReplyDeleteHi Terri,
ReplyDeleteMy largest ruler is 15 x 15 and I use it often to square up finished fabric pictures. It's also good for cutting & measuring wide pieces of fabric.
6.5 x 24 is the ruler I use for cutting most everything big and small, a 14 x 14 square for squaring up quilts and a long tape measure for actual measuring.
ReplyDeleteYou know, you've inspired me to go out and buy a larger ruler! I have a 16" square and the standard 6" by 24". I use them side by side to square up larger quilts, but I see where a 20" square would be even better. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'd like to purchase a 12" by 12" sketchbook like yours -- where did you buy it?
Diane
Hi Terri,
ReplyDeleteI have the 20 inch ruler and it is the only way to square up your quilts! Love it......wish I would have had it 20 years ago!
