Love That Color

This is what is currently hanging on my design wall.

My scrap fabric baskets have started to overflow on me and I decided I need to do something about it.  I've gotten better about the scraps I save--I've started throwing out the pieces that are just really too small to worry about (Yes, I used to save about anything).  I'm sure there are some of you that are shocked about that.  Ha!  Really, I just don't have the time to mess with the stuff that's too small.  So I've been saving the larger pieces.

I am a string quilt lover and this is the first one I've done where the block is a square shape.  I've done several with a rectangle as the base shape.

I usually use a foundation paper to sew my fabric strips to but I had run out after my last string quilt project. I wondered how hard it would be to just create the blocks without a foundation.  I did some web browsing on the subject and found a site that recommended using paper from phone books as your foundation.  DING!  I had plenty of that around, so I found an older book and started cutting out pages.  I then trimmed them into a square shape and they have been working great. I really just think I prefer working on a foundation as it is easy to determine when your block is about the right size.

See that orange fabric to the right, in the photo?  I found that in my scrap basket too and it will be plenty for the binding. Now to find some backing fabric and get this colorful beauty quilted.  It measures approximately 50" x 50".  The blocks are 6 3/4" square.
