Sunday Stuff

Happy Sunday y'all! I've been really busy this week getting the Paper Quilting Explorations class lessons ready and I'm almost there.

I attended a class given by my local Bernina shop on using some different presser feet on the sewing machine. It's a 5 week course and different feet are highlighted each week. This past week we learned about a cording foot, a couching foot and pin tucking feet. In some cases, there were several different feet for one type of process, because of differing sizes. I did get one of each type of foot and have played a little bit with one of them so far. I'm hoping to get some time to play further with the new feet so that I can take a stitch sampler with me when I go back for the second lesson.

I also attended my very first quilt guild meeting. I went as a guest so that I could experience what it would be like to attend regularly. I enjoyed it very much. It's fun and exciting knowing that there are lots of other people who are into fiber art. I didn't much care for the business part of the meeting, and I know a lot of the members are probably most interested in traditional quilting, but nevertheless, I think I will join the club and have ladies night out once a month.

Here's a photo of a daisy doodle wall hanging I've started. My Daisy Doodle Quilted Wall Hanging class started this week and I'm making a quilt along with the students. I've never made one in this color scheme before. I'm liking it so far.

Murphee is out for a stroll in the garden and he stopped for a pose. So I captured him on a 6" x 6" canvas board/panel. He is painted in acrylic and has a satin varnish for protection. He is looking for a loving home. If you would like to adopt Murphee, please see all the details in my etsy shop.

Happy Easter

I've been busy, really I have. I've been busy preparing some projects for an upcoming class I'm developing called Paper Quilting Explorations, mentioned in an earlier post. The workshop will revolve around working with several kinds of papers in paper quilting, creating exciting paper backgrounds for both stitching on and adding focal elements to, several projects which include small wall hangings and 3-D items, to name just a few. The workshop truly is a mixed media class as we'll be getting messy with paints, inks, and more. Here are more peeks at what will be going on in this workshop.

I haven't announced a date for the class yet as I'm still working on the lessons. I plan to announce more information here as I get closer to knowing what/when/etc. Also, don't forget you can join my newsletter group to keep informed about my world. Click the link over there, on the right side of my blog and you can join the group. Also, just wanted to mention that this workshop is a great companion to my upcoming book, Creative Paper Quilts: Applique, Embellishment, Patchwork, Piecework. It's not out yet, scheduled release date is late fall or early January.

The next photo shows some canvas panels I'm prepping for some paintings.

Next is a piece of handmade mulberry that I colored. I love love love this paper.

Painting Class

As you may recall, I'm in a painting class. Last week was the fourth week and we were to add a focal element. I couldn't think of what I wanted to do for my focal elements and that's why I didn't get around to showing these sooner. This week in class (our last week) we are putting the finishing touches on our paintings and sealing them.

I had started with three canvases and once I started adding the focal element on the third piece I decided I really hated what I was doing and may just paint over it all and start over. I'm not even going to show you what I did as I really hate it that much. But here are the other two. I think at this point my favorite is the one with the hummingbird.

Our teacher showed us how we could add our focal elements by either starting out with a piece of clip art or just painting our own design. The one with the girl was my own design. For the hummingbird, I started out with a black and white piece of clip art and pasted that down on my canvas. I painted all the color in and added the branch and leaves.

I'm Late

paper quilt, art, paper, quilt, cat, flowers
Oh my gosh! I totally forgot about revealing my quilt that's heading for Chicago.

Here's my excuse. On Friday evening I got a new laptop and I've been getting it all set up and playing with it. And....Bob and I did some tree pruning yesterday which took up a bit of my time. So am I forgiven?

By the way, the quilt above is the one going to Chicago. Just thought I'd mention that in case it wasn't too obvious. Tee hee!! The winner of my prize drawing is: #24 - Barb!

Barb, please email me with your address. Here's your winning prize (I hope you will like it):flower paper quilt

Note to Self

Don't put your coffee cup right next to your water-filled container for dirty paint brushes.

Here's a peek at what I've been doing. I'm in the process of preparing a new online class called Paper Quilting Explorations. I won't go into the details right this minute as I'm still working everything out. If you would like to be sure to get more information on this upcoming class you can sign up to my newsletter group and you'll be sure to keep informed about all my newsy information. For whatever that's worth.

I'm Going to Chicago

Tee hee! Just kidding. Well something of mine is going to be in Chicago at the International Quilt Festival held in April. I submitted two paper quilts to the Cloth Paper Scissors True Colors Challenge and one of the following was chosen for their exhibit.

paper quilt, art, paper, quilt, cat, flowerspaper quilt, art, paper, quilt, cat, flowersI'm not going to tell you which one was chosen though. Instead I'm going to have a little contest/giveaway. Comment on this post with your guess as to which quilt is going. Refer to the paper quilt in the first photo as #1 and the bottom paper quilt as #2. Next Saturday, I'll draw a winner from all the guesses, even if the guesses were wrong, you will still be in the giveaway. I'll also reveal which quilt is going to Chicago. The winner that I draw will get a gift from me.

In other news, I am teaching an online class called Gorgeous Gourds starting April 3. The class is held through www.joggles.com. You can see more information about this class here.

Painting Progress

Gosh I feel like I haven't gotten a thing accomplished this week. I finally did get into my studio just a tiny bit yesterday. Pretty pathetic for someone who doesn't work outside the home.

While in the studio I was able to complete the next lesson on my canvases. We pretty much just added more layers of texture. I introduced some more color on each of them. At this point I'm thinking they are looking more messy than anything. It's my understanding that we'll soon be adding a focal point onto our work, so maybe that will help. I had decided early on in this class I would follow the lessons as given and not stray and do my own thing. That way I can get a complete understanding of what the teacher is teaching. Then I may adapt the techniques to my own work and hopefully come up with something I like. We'll see.

Did you realize that we change the clocks ahead this weekend??? Wow, I can't believe we are doing that already.

I'd like to thank you all again for all your well wishes and congratulations on my upcoming book. All your support means so much to me. I get more and more excited each day and am frustrated at how slow the bookmaking/publishing process goes some days, but I do understand why. I guess I've never been blessed with patience.

Don't forget about my online class coming up at the end of this month. We'll be having lots of fun creating our funky flower garden, and what better time than now when spring is almost upon us. For more information, see the next post down.

Have a fabulous weekend!

Daisy Doodles Class Registration

Would you like to make your very own Daisy Doodles quilt? I'm going to be holding an online class. The class will start Wednesday, March 26, 2008.

daisy doodles fabric quiltHere's how the class will work:
Once you sign up and pay for the class I will email you a supply list and an invitation to a special Yahoo group. The lessons will be made available to students on a weekly basis beginning Wednesday, March 26, 2008. There are two lessons in this class. You’ll post your questions and photos in the Yahoo group and you’ll be able to interact with the other students as well. I’ll be available for questions and feedback throughout the entire period the class runs and of course I’m always available through direct email for those not comfortable posting questions in a group setting. You don't need to have a blog to participate in this class, you just need to have access to email.

Lessons for the class are delivered in .pdf format. As each lesson publishes you will receive an email from me with a link to a secure site where you can access the issue and save it to your own computer. You must have adobe acrobat 5.0 or higher to be able to open the lessons. Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free software that you can download here.

Vineyard

fabric art quilt wallhangingI finished this piece yesterday. I'm happy with how it turned out. I love these colors together and I mainly used purples and greens from my scrap basket. I did both some free-motion machine stitching and some hand stitching in both the focal area and background. I named it 'Vineyard' because the rows of purples and greens remind me of the rows of grapevines growing in a vineyard. It measures 10" x 13 7/8". I've added it to my etsy store.

Hope you're having a wonderful weekend. Today I'm having temps around 40 but winds gusting up to near 40 mph. Hold on to my hat.....

Strawberry Saturday

Here's a small paper quilt that I made yesterday. I tried scanning it but the buttons created too much shadowing on the scan. I hate it when that happens.
